Reading Comprehension and Writing Class

During a 6-8 week period we will focus on developing important abilities in Language Arts by reading a classic and beloved book. Our student readers will refer to details and examples in a text to relay or infer details of the story, will practice summarizing chapters and passages, describe characters, settings and plot in detail and explain major differences and similarities among central figures. Understanding words and phrases will also be a predominant intellectual endeavour as student readers will be prompted to create glossaries and wordbooks. Students will also experiment themselves as writers, they will introduce a topic adequately, create arguments, state opinions, and relay facts in a clear and organized fashion, and offer concrete and pertinent concluding statements. We will work together to create book reports, as well as book reviews.

In preparation for each class, students will be expected to read 1-2 chapters from the book. In order to make the best of their reading time, they will be given a worksheet prior to each session which they will need to fill out as their homework. It is best if students read the worksheet BEFORE they start reading the chapter(s) so they are actively looking for the information during their reading time.
