【習(xí)語注釋】

該習(xí)語中的silver spoon表示“銀湯匙；銀勺子”。該習(xí)語本義表示“出生時(shí)嘴里喊著銀湯匙”，主要用來喻指“born into a wealthy and privileged family”，即“出生在一個(gè)富裕而有特權(quán)的家庭”，相當(dāng)于漢語里的“出身富貴；出身豪門；生而富貴；出身名門；出身顯貴”。

She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and everything has been done for her. 

她出生于富貴人家，什么事都已為她安排得好好的。

Everyone said that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but actually he acquired his fortune through many years of hard work.

【閑話習(xí)語】

中世紀(jì)時(shí)期的湯匙主要是木制的，spoon一詞當(dāng)時(shí)用來表示“chip or splinter of wood”，即“木屑”，這也許就是為什么湯匙用spoon來表示的緣由吧。

盡管該習(xí)語的淵源大多被認(rèn)為是跟英國(guó)貴族有關(guān)，但其較早的書面使用記錄是出現(xiàn)在美語里，比如下面這段話（Deb. U.S. Congress, 1801）：

"It was a common proverb that few lawyers were born with silver spoons in their mouths."

1988年，在美國(guó)民主黨全國(guó)代表大會(huì)的主題演講中，得克薩斯州財(cái)政部長(zhǎng)安·理查茲修改了這個(gè)習(xí)語，她故意把習(xí)語中的spoon錯(cuò)說為foot，用以調(diào)侃出生富裕但總是誤用措詞的喬治·布什：

“Poor George, he can't help it - he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.”
