形容詞的用法和語序

Reading：

Niki Taylor is an average healthyall-American school kid -except that she is very rich. She is director of her own company and can earn more money in a day than her teachers earn in a year. At the age of fourteen she began her part-time model career. At sixteen she became the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of the fashion magazine Vogue. Today at seventeen, she is a multi-millionaire and has her own company to manage her business activities as one of the world’s most popular models. She often tries her best to do something for the poor and the unemployed. Being a high school student, she sometimes feels ashamed for her lessons. She wants to go to college. She said , “ This is not my only dream. After I graduate from college, I can start a different kind of business.” She is already finding it difficult to continue a normal life at home and school because her success is too well-known. The young expect her to wear beautiful clothes and make-up all the time.

I．用在名詞前的形容詞、不用在名詞前的形容詞及用作名詞的形容詞

1 形容詞用來描述人或事。可以用在單數(shù)和復(fù)數(shù)名詞前。多數(shù)形容詞可以用在連系動詞后面或名詞前面。

She is very rich. (在連系動詞be后面)

She became the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of the fashion magazine.(在名詞model前面)

2 下面的形容詞通常不用在名詞前面：afraid, alive, alone, apart, ashamed, asleep, awake, aware, glad,ill, pleased, ready, sure, unable, upset, well.

She sometimes feels ashamed for her lessons. （不說'an ashamed person’)

3 有些形容詞不能單獨用在連系動詞后面做表語，最常見的有： eventual, existing, countless, indoor, main, maximum, neighbouring, occasional, only, outdoor, principal.

This is not my only dream. (不說'The dreamisn’t only.’)

4 在談?wù)摽傮w上的一類人時，用 the + 形容詞. The + 形容詞后接復(fù)數(shù)動詞。

She often tries her best to do something for the poor(=poor people) and the unemployed. (=unemployed people)

The young(=young people) expect her towear beautiful clothes and make-up al the time.

常見的用作名詞的形容詞有： the blind, the dead, the deaf, the disabled, the elderly, theEnglish, the Spanish, 等。

the handicapped, the homeless, the injured,the old, the poor, the underprivileged, the

unemployed, theyoung.

小練習(xí)I. 用下列形容詞完成句子，每詞只用一次 alone, lonely, glad,happy：

1 Niki’s got lots of friends. She certainly isn’t a … person.

2 She’s always …when her friend come to see her.

3 She really enjoyed life. She’s a very … person.

4 Niki isn’t …in the house tonight. Jessica’s with her.

II. 形容詞的語序

Reading:

Martin’s 25 years old. He’s a pleasant young man. He’s honest and generous. His girlfriend Jessica is a beautiful slim dark-haired American girl who likes wearing long black silk dresses and expensive silver jewellery. She’s lively, warm and intelligent. Last week Martin bought himself a big new wooden bed. It’s 2.5 m long and 3 m wide. The mattress is 75 cm thick. He also bought a red and gold duvet cover to go on the bed. He wanted a long bed because he’s nearly 2 m tall. But now he doesn’t know where he’ll be sleeping in a few week’s time. This morning he had some sudden worrying news. The bank where he keeps all his money is having serious financial problems and is closing down!
