Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a little boy named Mencius. He lived with his dear mother in a small, simple house. In the beginning, their home was near a cemetery. Every day, as Mencius went out to play, he would see people dressed in black, looking sad and solemn. They were burying their loved ones. The little boy watched with wide eyes as they carried coffins and placed flowers on the graves. And soon, he began to play games that were just like what he saw there. He would pretend to be one of those people, making sad faces and going through the motions of a burial ceremony. 
His mother noticed this. She looked at her little Mencius and felt a pang of worry in her heart. She knew that this place was filling her son's mind with thoughts of death and mourning, and it wasn't a place where he could learn good and happy things. So, with a firm decision in her heart, she packed up their few belongings and they moved to a new place. The new place was near a busy marketplace. Oh, it was such a noisy and lively place! There were people everywhere, shouting to sell their wares. The merchants would call out, 'Come and buy my beautiful cloth!' or 'Taste the sweetest fruits here!' Mencius was quickly drawn to all this excitement. He started to imitate the merchants, shouting out his own made-up things to sell, and getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of bargaining and trading. 
His mother watched him and shook her head gently. She realized that this place was too chaotic and distracting for her son to focus on what was truly important - learning and growing into a kind and wise person. So, once again, she made a choice. She took Mencius by the hand and they set off to find a new home. This time, they came to live near a school. What a different sight it was! In the schoolyard, there were children laughing and learning. Inside the classrooms, the teachers were speaking in gentle voices, teaching the children about wonderful things like history, and poetry, and how to be good to one another. Mencius could hear the students reading aloud, their voices like a chorus of hope and knowledge. He was immediately fascinated. He would sit outside the school and listen intently. And then, he started to join in. He picked up books and tried to read the words, asking the older students questions. His mother saw this and a big smile spread across her face. She knew that finally, they had found the right place. 
As the days passed, Mencius grew and learned more and more in this wonderful environment. He became a curious and studious boy, always eager to discover new things. And because of his mother's three moves, he was able to set out on a path that would one day lead him to become a great and respected person, just like the stars that shine brightly in the night sky.
