Welcome back. Hmm… In this dialogue, the man showed up to work with alcohol on his breath.

That is not professional at all. He must drink too much last night. Hmm, wondering if he brushed his teeth in the morning.

Anyway, this man did a lot of things that his boss were not satisfied with. So he got fired at last.

Ok. Now let’s learn some important pronunciation tips first.

1. 輔音+元音連讀：

2. 弱讀：

弱讀是一種發(fā)音規(guī)律就是元音不飽滿時(shí)，所有的元音都弱讀成/?/。

文章中:

I don’t want to beat around the bush so I’m just gonna come out with it.

這里的gonna后面的a是元音但不飽滿，弱讀為/?/，所以gonna 讀作為[?ɡ?n?]。

gonna=going to

be going to

例句：

I’m going to take a shower.

= I’m gonna take a shower.

我要去洗個(gè)澡。

類似用法有：

wanna=want to

例句：

I want to go home.

= I wanna go home.

我想回家。

(注意：wants to不等于wanna所以主語是he, she, it 等第三人稱單數(shù)時(shí)只能用wants to)

那么注意這種gonna和wanna都是美語中非正式的用法，如果你要寫論文，報(bào)紙新聞等較為正式的文章是不可以這樣使用的，必須把所有單詞寫完整。

1. preoccupied [pri?ɑ?kjupa?d] adj. 心事重重

It means thinking and/or worrying continuously about something so that you do not pay attention to other things.

它指的是不斷地思考和/或擔(dān)心某事，從而不去注意其他事情。

例句：

It was evening. The street was packed with people, but they were so preocuupied as they went their way that none of them noticed what she had just done.

此時(shí)正值傍晚時(shí)分，街上到處都擠滿了人，但街上的每個(gè)人都心事重重，以至于沒有人注意到她剛剛做了什么。

2. direct impact 直接影響

    direct [d??rekt] adj. 直接的

    impact [?m?p?kt] n. 影響

In this dialogue, Isabel told Anthony that the company had made some decisions which would have a direct impact on his employment.

在這段對(duì)話中，伊莎貝爾告訴安東尼，公司已經(jīng)做出了一些決定，這些決定將對(duì)他的就業(yè)產(chǎn)生直接影響。

It means these decisions will have a noticeable effect on Anthony’s career.  

它指的是這些決定將對(duì)安東尼的職業(yè)生涯產(chǎn)生顯著影響。

例句：

The amount of water we use, a waste, in day to day life has a direct impact on the environment.

我們?nèi)粘Ｉ钪械挠盟速M(fèi)對(duì)環(huán)境有著直接的影響。

3. resent [r??zent] v. 怨恨；憤恨；憤憤不平

It means feeling bitter or angry about something, especially because you feel it is unfair.

對(duì)某事感到痛苦或憤怒，尤其是因?yàn)槟阌X得它不公平。

記憶技巧：

re 相反；反對(duì)；不+sent 感覺→反感→不滿

補(bǔ)充：

sent = to feel, feeling 感覺

assent [??sent] n./ v. 贊成 （as 加強(qiáng)+sent 感覺→感覺一樣→贊成）

consent [k?n?sent] n./v. 同意，準(zhǔn)許

dissent [d??sent] n./v. 不同意，持異議的

例句：

I deeply resented her criticism.

我對(duì)她的批評(píng)感到非常氣憤。

1. beat around the bush 繞圈子/旁敲側(cè)擊（去說明...）

該短語多用于疑問句或否定祈使句。

It is deliberately ambiguous or unclear in order to mislead or withhold information.

它是指故意含糊或不清楚，以誤導(dǎo)或隱瞞信息。

This idiomatic phrase is to express that you’re kind of looking for the right or maybe more polite words to say something.

這是一個(gè)習(xí)語，用來表達(dá)你在尋找合適的或者更禮貌的詞語來表達(dá)某事。

例句：

Don't beat around the bush, come straight to the point!

別拐彎抹角，直截了當(dāng)?shù)卣f吧！

2. come out with it 說出來

It is the opposite way to say beat around the bush.

它是繞圈子的反義表述方式。

例句：

You have anything on your mind, I want you to come out with it.

如果你有任何想法，我希望你說出來。

3. let you go 讓你走

When Isabel finally came out with it, she told Anthony that, “ we’re going to have to let you go”.

當(dāng)伊莎貝爾最終說出這件事時(shí)，她告訴安東尼：“我們必須讓你走”。

So, this is actually a nicer way of saying “you’re fired”. It is a little bit more polite.

所以，這實(shí)際上是一種更溫和的表達(dá)方式指“你被解雇了”。這樣說更禮貌些。
