除了“水深沒(méi)頂”,out of one's depth 還有其他寓意

I can’t swim, so I am not going out of my depth.

I'm not a strong swimmer, so I prefer not to go out of my depth.

因此它常用來(lái)比喻超過(guò)了某人的知識(shí)或能力范圍,或遇到難以對(duì)付的問(wèn)題了,相當(dāng)于 over one's head,但不是 out of one's head,因?yàn)楫?dāng) out of one's head 作表語(yǔ)時(shí),表示某人神經(jīng)錯(cuò)亂等,例如:

out of/beyond one's depth:

After watching this film, the audience realized that making comedy movies was out of the depth of this director.

I asked Alex to consult on this project because it's a bit out of my depth.

I was out of my depth in the advanced class, so I moved to the intermediate class.

The conductor realized that playing the fugue at the right tempo was beyond their depth .

over one's head:

A lot of the jokes went right over my head.

I tried to take in what he was saying about nuclear fusion, but most of it went over my head.

out of one's head:

He must be out of his head to have spent that much money on an old car!

You must be out of your head to want to go there now!

1. out of 表來(lái)源,例如:

I paid for the damage out of my savings.

The dress was made out of velvet.

2. out of 表脫離或離開(kāi),例如:

I got out of bed.

Both she and her husband are out of work.

I got out of the habit of riding my bike to work.

I can't get that tune out of my head.

You'd better put the idea of marriage out of your head.
