The town of Kief located in the north of North Dakota stands amid endless prairies and farms.

It used to be a prosperous town but today only seven people live here.

Some fifty years ago more than 300 people lived in Kief today only seven locals are still here.

The Richard's grandfather came here from the former Russian Empire.

His dad got on a ship over at Odessa Russia and came over here in 1902 and then he homesteaded in 1905.He found some land and he homestead it.

Locals remember when most of the residents of Kief were farmers.

There were a handful of churches and two schools.

The town grew thanks to the proximity to a railroad.

The train came out here and this is what they used to call a tank town. .

They had a big water tank for the old steam locomotive.

We' d stop here and fill up water and go again and that's where people settled.

But locomotives were replaced by modern trains and the stop in Kief was no longer needed.

First one of the schools closed which children were taught Russian and German among other subjects.

It seemed like when the school closed in 1959 and it kinda went down in older population.

Young people left for bigger cities and one by one all businesses closed or relocated.

Today it is just one church that stays open.

Locals mostly missed the grocery store that closed.The nearest one is now 8o kilometres away.

Today Kief is often called a ghost town but locals don't feel that way.

Well the reason why I didn't call it ghost town is because I just said there's no restaurant,there's no gas station, there's no bar, there's no business places.

我不叫它鬼城，原因是我說過那里沒有餐館，沒有加油站，沒有酒吧，沒有商業(yè)場所。

Because there are still people that live in town.

因為還有人住在城里。

Kief was founded more than a hundred years ago but today only the church that opens its doors once a week reminds locals of a lively place the town used to be.

基輔始建于一百多年前，但如今只有每周開放一次的教堂讓當?shù)厝讼肫疬@個小鎮(zhèn)曾經(jīng)是一個充滿活力的地方。
