大家習慣于稱呼他為米勒，實際按照法語發(fā)音應(yīng)翻作“米葉”。米勒創(chuàng)作的作品以描繪農(nóng)民的勞動和生活為主，他用新鮮的眼光去觀察自然，具有濃郁的農(nóng)村生活氣息。

羅曼·羅蘭在所著的《米勒傳》指出：“米勒，這位將全部精神灌注于永恒的意義勝過剎那的古典大師，從來就沒有一位畫家像他這般，將萬物所歸的大地給予如此雄壯又偉大的感覺與表現(xiàn)”。

米勒對大自然和農(nóng)村生活有一種特殊的深厚感情，他早起晚歸，上午在田間勞動，下午就在不大通光的小屋子里作畫。米勒的生活異常困苦，但這并沒有減弱他對藝術(shù)的酷愛和追求，他常常由于沒錢買顏料就自己制造木炭條畫素描。

米勒愛生活、愛勞動、愛農(nóng)民，他曾說過：“無論如何農(nóng)民這個題材對于我是最合適的?！泵桌赵诎捅人傻牡谝环碜髌肥恰恫シN者》 。以后相繼創(chuàng)作了《拾穗者》和《晚鐘》等名作。
