當(dāng)你老了

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,

當(dāng)你老了，頭發(fā)花白，睡意沉沉，

And nodding by the fire, take down this book,

倦坐在爐旁，取下這本書來，

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

慢慢讀著，追夢(mèng)當(dāng)年的眼神

Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

那柔美的神采與深幽的暈影。

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

多少人愛過你青春的片影，

And loved your beauty with love false or true,

愛過你的美貌，以虛偽或是真情，

But one man loved the Pilgrim Soul in you,

惟獨(dú)一人愛你那朝圣者的心，

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

愛你哀戚的臉上歲月的留痕。

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

為爐柵邊，你彎下了腰

Murmur, a little sadly. how Love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead

愛情是怎樣逝去，又怎樣步上群山，

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

本詩是葉芝寫給莫德·岡女士的。詩人在講述自己對(duì)莫德·岡的愛慕之情時(shí)，為了突出自己永恒的愛，詩人采用了對(duì)比的手法。他指出許多人愛戀的僅僅是莫德·岡的青春和美麗，而這些都是短暫即逝的，但詩人認(rèn)為只有他一人獨(dú)獨(dú)愛她的靈魂。莫德·岡參加過愛爾蘭獨(dú)立運(yùn)動(dòng)，所以詩人在詩中說她有“朝圣者的靈魂”( the pilgrim soul )，而這也正是令詩人葉芝對(duì)其一往情深的原因所在?？闪钊藝@息的是詩人并沒能最終得到自己心目中女神的愛，所以詩的結(jié)尾透露著詩人的淡淡憂傷。
