The roots of Valentine's day go all the way back to ancient fertility festival in mid February called Lupercalia (牧神節(jié)) Later the church chose mid February for St. Valentine's day in order to christianize the celebration. There were more than one Christian figures named Valentine. One of them was sentenced to death for performing marriage ceremonies in secret after Emperor Claudius II banned the marriage for young Roman men, thinking single men made better soliders. It wasn't until 1300s though, the holidy became definitively associated with love and romance. By 17th century people in Great Britain began the tradition exchanging cards or letters.
