imperative obligatory 這組形容詞都含“強(qiáng)迫的”、“必須的”意思。 compulsory “強(qiáng)迫的”、“強(qiáng)制性的”, 指由上對下的強(qiáng)制要求必須做到的。
1) We cannot choose whether we will pay income tax or not, because payment of income tax is compulsory.
(我們不能選擇我們是否要繳納所得稅,因?yàn)橹Ц端枚愂菑?qiáng)制性的。)
2) If a certain subject is compulsory for a degree, a student cannot avoid taking an examination on this subject.
(如果某一科是目學(xué)位必修的,這門課學(xué)生不能不參加考試。)

imperative “必須做到的”,指命令式強(qiáng)制要求必須做到的,或指環(huán)境、情況使迫必須做到的。

obligatory “有義務(wù)的”、“必須做到的”,指道義和法律上的要求必須做到的,但側(cè)重于義務(wù)性,不是強(qiáng)迫一定要做到的。 1) The shopkeeper agreed to replace the faulty good though it is not obligatory for him to do so.
(店主答應(yīng)更換有缺陷的商品,盡管這不是他必須要這樣做的。) 2) Serving in the armed forces in not obligatory/compulsory for women in most countries.
