用某些特別的動(dòng)詞做比較，生活上也很常用，不過也是多半只用在非正式場合。(like這裡當(dāng)介系詞用)
(1) to drink like a fish:
喝酒像魚喝水那樣。指一個(gè)人酒量很大(drink a lot of alcohol) (只是把人喝酒與魚喝水相比而已)
例如:
When Mr. A has a special occasion, he can drink like a fish.
A先生在特別場合，喝很多酒。
Being an alcoholic, Ed is known for drinking like a fish.
Ed是酒鬼，以酒量大而出名。
另一句: as drunk as a lord也是酩酊大醉。(lord是指公認(rèn)的一群酗酒者)
有時(shí)指人游泳很好也說: He swims like a fish.
(2) to eat like a horse:
像馬吃草那樣。也就是指吃得很多(eat large amount of food)
例如:
In order to get back what he pays for a buffet, Mr. Cheng eats like a horse.
鄭先生為了撈回本錢，在「包肥」食堂吃得很多。
如用複數(shù):
As a football team they always eat like horses.
足球隊(duì)的隊(duì)員們，常常吃得很多。
(以上多半指吃多少，係指食量)
但如果說:
He eats like a pig.
(係指他狼吞虎嚥，不懂餐桌禮節(jié)，表示吃的方式)
(3) to fight like cats and dogs: 像狗貓般的爭鬥。指人與人間吵得天翻地覆或激烈的爭鬥。(argue violently)
例如:
Some people are prone to fight like cats and dogs in trivial matters.
有些人容易為了芝麻小事，吵得天翻地覆。
In order to gain more power and privilege, many Chinese politicians tend to fight like cats and dogs.
許多中國政客，為了爭權(quán)奪利，不惜鬥得你死我活。
(It rains cats and dogs，又是俚語，指傾盆大雨)
(4) to sing like a bird: 唱得像鳥兒那樣好聽。多半指女人聲音好，音調(diào)優(yōu)美悅耳的唱歌(Woman's voice very lovely)
例如:
Ever since she was a teen, Mary has sung like a bird.
Mary自從少年時(shí)，就唱得很好聽。
(動(dòng)詞時(shí)態(tài): sing, sang, sung)
Her voice is aways pleasing to the ear, because she sings like a bird.
她的聲音很悅耳，因?yàn)樗煤軆?yōu)美。
至於to sing like a nightingale，像歌鴝般的唱。
多半用在古文學(xué)的詩歌。
以上是一般正常用法。
但在criminal slang裡，to sing like a bird，意思又是認(rèn)罪。例如:
When the police put him in jail, he sang like a bird.
當(dāng)警察把他關(guān)進(jìn)牢裡，他才認(rèn)罪了。
(5) to sleep like a log:
指睡得很熟，很死沉，像塊木板。(sleep deeply and soundly)
例如:
I could not wake Bob up, for he was sleeping like a log.
我無法叫醒Bob，因?yàn)樗煤苁臁?
Even when traveling, Mr. A has been able to sleep like a log.
即使旅行，A先生仍然睡得死沉。
(6) to smoke like a chimney:
抽煙像灶囟。也就是煙抽得很多，很厲害。
(smoke lots of cigarettes)
例如:
Mr. Lee consumes three packs of cigarettes a day; he surely smokes like a chimney.
李先生一天抽三包煙，他真是像個(gè)煙囟。
有時(shí)可用複數(shù):
Many Chinese people who offer guests cigarettes may also smoke like chimneys.
許多老中用香煙招待客人，自己可能也是煙鬼。
(7) to spend money like water:
花錢如用水。此指亂花錢，很奢侈。(be extravagant or spend money quickly)
例如:
Now that he is a successful businessman, Mr. B spends money like water.
B先生既然是位成功的商人，他就奢侈地亂花錢。
It is better to be frugal; don't spend money like water.
最好還是節(jié)儉些，不要亂花錢。
